The 90's kids are all nostalgic again. Guess why now? After Cartoon Network turned CN, Dragon BallZ got replaced with Chota Bheem, Maruti800 productions stopped and Microsoft took away suppport from Windows XP, this mature generation has to say adieu to yet another close friend. Yes Orkut is finally leaving us all on 30th September, 2014 as Google finally shuts it down.
As the first big hit when it comes to social networking, when Internet started feeling like what it is today, the 90's kids got lots of treasured moments stored up there and we definitely can't let that go. No way; thats a definite investment for lonely retrospection when we grow old and look into our past and have that wry smile on our face. So here's the most simple guide to store up all your Orkut account data: from your albums to your scrapbook, testimonials and almost everything else that belongs to your Orkut account. However one should note that the information related to public communities on Orkut will still be there and Google is not going to delete them.
Ofcourse Google has already given an option to import all albums on your Orkut profile with Google+ photos. You can do so by clicking here(http://www.orkut.co.in/AlbumsExport) and selecting albums that you want to export to Google+.
This is a very simple tutorial and as a matter of fact Google has already done half the work for you. Only that it hasn't really publicized this method to archive your Orkut profile. The tool we use here is a Google service called Google Takeout. And its not just about your Orkut profile. With this tool you can store data from any service you use with your Google profile.
Step by Step Guide:
1) Go to Google Takeout and log in your Google Account.
2)Click Create An Archive.
3) Check on Orkut under Social tab and click on Create Archive.
4) Download after its made in zip format.
Uncompressing the zip file
Your archive will take some time to be made depending on your profile size. Once it is done, you will also get an email confirming the same so that you can log out if the process takes too long. To download your archive after logging in again simply click on My Archive tab.
The archive is actually a set of html files compressed in a zip folder to save your download time. On uncompressing your zip file, you may find a html file titled errors.html with your Orkut Archive.
This file enlists the errors that might have crept in while archiving your Orkut profile so that you know what might be missing from your archive. A sample of what the error file might contain:
Now inside your Orkut folder you will find two separate folders:
- Photos - one containing all your albums and pictures under one roof
- Profile - containing other data like your scrapbook entries and testimonials.
To collectively view all your Orkut data as you are used to viewing from your web browser, open the folder Profile followed by index.html and you can neglect whatever there is in the internal folder.
So thats it, your beloved Orkut profile, permanently saved and secure with you. Remember very soon this facility is going to go down too and Google Takeout will no longer provide archiving service for Orkut. So make it fast!
